SAN FRANCISCO, May 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Prey Software, provider of the cross-platform, open source anti-theft software that protects more than eight million mobile devices, today announced new data management capabilities and upgrades to its Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions that reflect all necessary knowledge regarding the gathering, use, and destiny of all personal data. As a global company, Prey Software is making these changes to ensure that it is in compliance with the new European Union (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which goes into effect on May 25.

“Because Prey Anti-Theft is built on an Open Source platform, Prey Software has always promoted the proper and transparent handling of data,” said Carlos Yaconi, founder and CEO, Prey Software. “Now with GDPR, Prey is taking steps to transform the Prey platform into an even more open and privacy-first environment. This means new Privacy Policies, revamped Terms & Conditions, and changes to the tool itself.”

New privacy updates to Prey Anti-Theft include:

Cookie Usage Transparency – Prey is modifying its cookie usage to minimize essential cookies and to provide opt-out for non-essential cookies.

  • At the Online Panel: Users will be informed about and prompted to
opt-in to all non-essential cookies, meaning all trackers that aren’t necessary
for the service’s proper functioning. These will be listed and the collection’s
    purpose explained.
  • A new Opt-Out Hub: Located in the Prey website’s navigation panel, this tool enables users to with withdraw their consent at any time and turn off permission to track any non-essential cookies, email or services.
  • To learn more about which cookies are utilized both in the panel and in our website, please visit the following link.

ARCO Rights – With Prey Anti-Theft, the user has direct access to all personal data through their account settings where they can also modify all personal data. A user can cancel or block basic personal data by deleting their Prey account using the Online Panel. The right to oppose certain, specific processing of personal data within a file does not apply to the personal data (name and email) handled by Prey’s service.

Users also are free to opt-out of any data processing that is not directly necessary to the service’s proper functioning (cookies, mailing lists, notifications). When it comes to personal data generated by the app (device location), Prey acts only when requested and the user can stop its use at any given moment and block any automatic actions by disabling constant tracking.

Portability Setting – Available via the user’s online panel, this tool enables a user to request and receive any or all of their personal data. Prey also ensures that all third-party vendors connected to its platform provide the pertinent portability portals to comply with the user’s right to request and access to any navigation and website generated data.
