BELLEVUE, Wash., Nov. 29, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — 5G Americas, the industry trade association and voice of 5G and LTE for the Americas, today announced the publication of 5G Services and Use Cases, an insightful industry report on 5G technology addressing new trends in a broad range of use case categories and business models with disparate technical requirements and mapping them to 5G capabilities.

Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas noted, “To make 5G industry transformation a reality, there is a need for close collaboration between use case developers, vertical industries and 5G system designers to maximize the impact and ensure mutually beneficial outcomes.”

As an initial step towards making those connections and initiating the needed cooperation, the report by 5G Americas identifies new trends in different use case categories, outlines their technical requirements and maps them to 5G capabilities.

“While 5G technology will provide some tools to meet the growing demand for cellular services, it is also expected that 5G technology will generate even more demand by expanding connectivity capabilities and improving mobile access,” commented Chris Pearson. “It is envisioned that 5G technology can provide a platform for innovation that will help to transform vertical industries, improve efficiency and functionality, expand economic productivity, and impact nearly all aspects of society.”

Mobile network operators will have new opportunities; however, they also face deployment challenges to support new wireless services in a cost-efficient way. For example, mobile broadband requires a significant increase in capacity over a macro-scale coverage area. At the same time, sites along highways in close proximity are needed to support connected vehicles as the smart car becomes even smarter as part of the evolution towards fully autonomous vehicles. Drones will also require communication coverage at different heights that will support a new level of mobility. IoT devices and sensors need deeper coverage to extend reach and improve battery life. It is critical to understand how to build the mobile network of the future that will support these and a multitude of other use cases.

This 5G Americas white paper probes into the opportunities and challenges of deploying 5G networks and the impact of regulatory and policy decisions at various levels of government. 5G Americas notes that it is vital for the cellular industry to secure adequate licensed spectrum to enable the use cases envisioned for 5G technology and ensure that there are regulatory frameworks that facilitate infrastructure development and deployment to meet the growth in demand for cellular services.

5G Americas white paper 5G Services and Use Cases captures the different aspects of 5G technology and the role that it will play across multiple sectors. Here is a breakdown of the topics that are covered:

  • Market drivers, economics, timelines and trends
  • Vertical industries transformation by 5G technology
  • 5G use cases and services
  • Technology enablers and 5G architecture
  • 3GPP 5G core network architecture
  • Network topology for core and RAN deployment
  • 5G service and operational key performance indicators

5G Services and Use Cases was written by project co-leaders Rao Yallapragada of Intel and Brian Daly of AT&T and other 5G Americas member companies. The whitepaper is available for free download on the 5G Americas website.
