Mobile technology becomes a key component of small businesses

In a world where technological innovations drive competition in a variety of industries, those that implement emerging tools and procedures are more likely to gain an edge over the rivals that don’t. Modern advancements break down the barriers that once separated large companies from small and medium-sized businesses.

The widespread accessibility of mobile technology is just one factor that enables modest business owners to run their organizations to the same degree as their grander counterparts, no matter where they are.

A recent survey by Sage North America highlighted some of the advantages small companies see by embracing mobile devices, while also showcasing ways owners can better plan for the future to ensure they compete on a level playing field with their peers.

How mobile helps small businesses
When running a fledgling company, it’s important for business leaders to save money wherever they can. Even a cancelled workday could spell trouble thanks to missed revenue and even a diminished reputation in the eyes of clients, but with mobile devices, small organizations can ease some of their burdens.

According to Sage North America, 73 per cent of Canadian small businesses found mobile technology had a positive relationship on their customer service performance. Whether it’s through speedy responses to customer inquiries or consistent updates through social media, mobile platforms help companies connect with their constituents and build loyalty.

Furthermore, lost revenue from bad weather can be avoided thanks to smartphones and tablets as well. Around 32 per cent of the businesses surveyed said that mobile helped them continue daily operations to some degree in poor weather conditions.

Planning for the future
Despite mobile technology becoming such an integral piece of everyday business, not everyone makes room for future device purchases in their budgets.

Out of the 1,628 small and medium-sized businesses interviewed by Sage, 78 per cent admitted to not accounting for the cost of mobile devices into their fiscal plans.

While this may reflect a growing number of bring-your-own-device policies in the workplace, small businesses still should plan for the growing role of mobile to ensure they keep pace with the times.
