Facebook: email and contacts bug to be resolved

Facebook: email and contacts bug to be resolved
July 02 19:13 2012 Print This Article

This weekend, many Facebook users were forced upon them @facebook.com email addresses. However, that wasn’t all, they also got hit with Facebook overwriting their contact’s email addresses to their @facebook.com email address. This caused many Facebook users to lose quite a lot of emails, as you can imagine.

Facebook of course said that the overwriting of email contacts was a “contact sync API bug” which happened to occur the same time Facebook made their email changes.

According to a statement from Facebook:

Contact synchronization on devices is performed through an API. For most devices, we’ve verified that the API is working correctly and pulling the primary email address associated with the users’ Facebook account. However, for people on certain devices, a bug meant that the device was pulling the last email address added to the account rather than the primary email address, resulting in @facebook.com addresses being pulled. We are in the process of fixing this issue and it will be resolved soon. After that, those specific devices should pull the correct addresses.

While we are happy that Facebook will fix this issue, Facebook won’t change the @facebook.com email address to be the default one on your account unless you have made the effort to make your other addresses visible.
